Semblance Artist Talk - Sama Alsaibi and Neil Chowdury

Sama Alshaibi is an artist born in Basra, Iraq to an Iraqi father and Palestinian mother and is now a naturalized US citizen. Alshaibi's work evokes the language of suffering, displacement and loss.

Chowdhury has an identity that is neither American nor English, nor Indian, but existing in something between these three points of origin and influence, his work points to the unbridgeable chasms of identity shaped by the diasporic experience.

CORE New Art Space
time capsule:  a photography show

March 7 – March 24, 2013

Artists’ Reception, March 8, 6 – 9 pm

CORE New Art Space will present an international call for entry photography exhibit, entitled “time capsule,” in conjunction with the 2013 biennial Month of Photography (MOP).

“time capsule” will be an exhibit about the “here and now.”  The focus is on contemporary culture.  Thinking in time capsule terms helps us communicate something about today, examine where we are in relation to the past, and imagine where we may be heading in the future.  It helps us question what things are important and why the future may be different because of what is happening now.  Artists were asked to consider what and who inspires their work right now.  Where and when they grab a camera, a phone or anything with a lens to capture what’s happening in the world around them; and how technology and/or social media has changed the way they use photography as an artistic expression in an ever-changing, image conscious, gadget-laced social media environment.

This is CORE’s first electronic submission show, and entries were received from all over the United States, and as far away as the Netherlands.  Hamidah Glasgow, Executive Director and Chief Curator for The Center for Fine Art Photography, in Ft. Collings, Colorado was the juror for the show.

Photography by 32 artists will be on display.  For a preview of the show, please check out this link:

Colorado Photographic Arts Center - CPAC

'Phōs: Light Today', curated by Conor King, will be a multidisciplinary exhibition that brings together artists who are exploring new possibilities in the mediums of photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, video, and installation. By exhibiting a selection of works from multiple mediums this exhibition aims to examine the ways in which artists use and represent light in art. Throughout history artists have been concerned with the representation and manipulation of light, creating works that symbolize light, use it as a material both in its natural and artificial forms, and distort or alter it to better understand its characteristics and limits. With this exhibition we see contemporary artists continuing to experiment with the ways in which light can be seen and understood using new technologies, harnessing it in installations, and exploring it as material and subject matter. 'Phōs: Light Today' aims to connect the works of artists engaged in experimentation with light and challenges viewers to participate in this continuing multi-medium exploration.

~Tuesday, March 5th:  TIE (The International Experimental Cinema
Exposition) Tribute to Ektachrome and Kodachrome Reversal.

In response to Kodak's recent discontinuation of their Ektachrome 100d
stock (the last available color reversal stock to be mass-produced in the
country), curator Francis Symonds put together a program of films shot
exclusively on color reversal film.  In an age where many movies are shot
digitally, and those that aren't are projected digitally, these types of
works stand out more strongly than ever as purely filmic and cinematic
experiences. The films in this program will cover a variety of forms:
silent lyrics, structural light and color studies, experimental essays,
personal home movies, and sensuous nature documentaries. All work will be
shown in its original format (16mm and super-8), and the program will
feature works by such noted filmmakers as Saul Levine, Jennifer
Montgomery, Gordon Nelson, and Tara Merenda Nelson.

This event will be held at the Dikeou Collection in the Colorado Building.
1615 California Street, 5th Floor, Denver, CO 80202

Doors open at 7:00 pm, screenings begin promptly at 7:30 and will run
until about 9:30.
Screening will be followed by a brief Q&A session with Curator and TIE
Creative Director. The program will end at 10:00 pm. This event is free to
attend and open to the public. Light Refreshments will be provided.

~Thursday, March 14:  Opening Reception for Sebastiaan Bremer at the
Dikeou Collection Pop-Up Space.

The Dikeou Collection is pleased to announce the acquisition of new works
by Dutch photographer Sebastiaan Bremer from his series, SCHOENER
GOETTERFUNKEN.  Bremer currently lives and works in New York City, and the
prints from this series were made with color reversal Kodak Safety film.
In this series, Bremer works primarily with snapshots taken from his own
family vacations, where he paints or draws upon the images, enlarges them,
and then re-photographs them.  This creates works that exist in between
the worlds of painting and photography, where, as Bremer says, “you see
how it’s
made but the magic still works.”

Two of Bremer's large-scale photographs will be on view at the Dikeou
Collection Pop-Up Space located 1331 Bannock Street, Denver CO 80204. An
opening reception will take place on Thursday, March 14, from 6:00 to 8:00
pm.  This event is free to attend and open to the public. Light
refreshments will be provided.

~Saturday, April 6: Family Day the Dikeou Collection Pop-Up Space.

The Dikeou Collection invites families to come participate in a free
photo-based art project inspired by the works of photographer, Sebastiaan
Bremer.  Bremer enhances serene vintage photographs with his own personal
touches of paint and ink to create fun, imaginative images.  We will
provide participants with the materials needed to create their own
impressions upon a variety of antique photographs.

This project will be hosted at the Dikeou Collection Pop-Up Space.
1331 Bannock St., Denver CO 80204, from 12:00-4:00 pm.
This event is free to attend and open to the public.  Light Refreshments
will be provided.

~DATE TBD: Artist Talk with Sebastiaan Bremer.

More information to follow.

~Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14: Doors Open Denver at the Dikeou

Curated by Mark Sink
Exhibition on view March 8th through April 7th, 2013

Opening night celebration March 15, 2013 (6-8PM for Members; 8-10PM for General Public)

Lucas Foglia: A Natural Order

In 2006, photographer Lucas Foglia began travelling throughout the southeastern United States befriending and photographing communities of people who had chosen to leave mainstream society and live off the grid. His interest in the project stemmed from his own upbringing. Like his subjects, he had grown up on a small farm with parents who had chosen a self-sufficient lifestyle. During his travels, Foglia met a new generation of people who had chosen to live radically independent lifestyles for some very modern reasons––including worries over the current economy, environmental concerns or simply to reduce government interference. A Natural Order showcases the people Foglia met and the communities he visited.

Trace Gallery is pleased to present Permanence|Decay – a group photography show.

Spiral staircases leading into nowhere. Slabs of granite piercing the sky. Weathered bones on a sand beach. Mausoleums. Trees growing in abandoned buildings. Mushrooms in the rainforest. Bristlecone pines on wind-blown mountain tops. Cracks on the pavement.
We are transient in this world, but our grandest creations are a testament to our unfulfilled longing for permanence. Nature seems to have achieved what we strive for, yet it feasts on decay.

American Landscape and the Apocalyptic Sublime
DAVID MAISEL / BLACK MAPS is a solo show surveying four chapters of Maisel's larger ongoing series titled Black Maps. Composed of large-scale photographs, this exhibition leads the viewer on a hallucinatory journey through landscapes in the American West that have been transformed through the physical and environmental effects of industrial-scale water diversion projects, open-pit mineral extraction, and urban sprawl. Maisel's powerful aerial photographs exist as aesthetic and political archives documenting the impact of both human consumption and inhabitation. More than mere records, these photographs evoke sublime beauty and apocalyptic destruction, positioning Maisel at the forefront of a complex new approach to framing and interpreting issues of contemporary landscape and culture. Maisel's mineral-based, painterly color prints transform poisonous human-altered landscapes into subjects and objects of extreme beauty while simultaneously unveiling the magnitude of hidden ecological devastation that punctuates the vast interior of the American West, a space that is often represented in the visual, cinematic, and literary arts as endless and eternal.

Selections from the CU Art Museum's Collection of Photography from the 19th Century to the Present

The exhibition features selections from the museum’s collection of over 1300 photographs highlighting themes including remembrance and memory, the gaze and the female body, and 19th century tropes as they are referenced in the works of contemporary artists. Bellocq, Michael Bishop, Kate Breakey, Albert Chong, Linda Connor, Judy Dater, Jeanne Dunning, Ralph Gibson, Judith Golden, Philippe Halsman, Robert Heinecken, Mary Ellen Mark, Esther Parada, Laura Shill, Lou Stoumen, Ruth Thorne-Thomsen, and George Woodman. Houston Fotofest Discoveries exhibition from January 26-March 30, 2013.

January 26 – March 30, 2013

FotoFest is an international non-profit photographic arts and education organization, based in Houston, Texas.  The program was founded in 1983 to promote the exchange of art and ideas through international programs and the presentation of photographic art.  As part of FotoFest’s internationally known Biennial, FotoFest, sponsors the Meeting Place where photographers take part in portfolio reviews with international curators, publishers and writers.  The Discoveries of the Meeting Place exhibition becomes the showcase for the best work discovered at the previous Biennial portfolio review.  Since its founding in 1996 the Discoveries exhibitions have traveled to Brazil, Russia, Mexico and throughout the United States.  The 2012 exhibition features the work of ten artists from around the globe  – Lamia Maria Abillama, Damion Berger, Erika Diettes, Natan Dvir, Pablo Gimenez Zapiola, Bill McCullough, Nancy Newberry, Jhinryung Oh, and Michael Tummings.  Their photographs have a breadth of subject matter that ranges from images of women of privilege in Rio De Janeiro, religious rituals in Israel, remnants of the “disappeared” in Colombia, to Texas cheerleaders, projections of poems on freight trains, and hunters in the forests in Germany.  The works also represent diverse genres of photographic processes.
